Greece Players Turn Down World Cup Bonus Can Super Eagles Do Same?

Greece's football squad

You might not like their style of play, but this would appear to be another reason to like Greece ahead of their World Cup last 16 clash against Costa Rica. This World Cup has been dogged with bonus rows. First with Cameroon, even before they set off to Brazil. And, most famously last week with Ghana where 3 million dollars had to be shipped out to Brazil ahead of their final game against Portugal.

Now, the Greece team have written to their prime minister Antonis Samaras and told him they are not interested in their World Cup bonus but simply want the money to be put towards a sports center for the national team. The Greek press report that the squad in Brazil wrote a short letter saying: “We do not want as extra bonus, or money. We only play for Greece and its people. All we want is for you to support our effort to find a land and create a sports center that will house our National team.” This letter was written on Sunday June 29, 2014 and signed by all 23 squad members, it came as a result of Greece reaching the second round of the World Cup for the first time in their history. Presumably, the Greek squad realize they are all well-paid individuals and are concerned for the future of Greece in international football.

Nothing Shocks Again

THE body counts from the war against terrorism are getting abnormal. Whether the losses are on the part of the security agencies or mere standbys, like school children, it is becoming clearer .that government needs to do more.
Terrorists may do all they can to make the country unsafe, but government has the responsibility to .not only protect us, it has to make us feel safe.
What we find more absurd is that the seasonal killings, their brutality, which the killers have .made their trademark, no longer shock.
The condemnations have thinned. We have moved on with obviously more important matters like who becomes whatever in 2015. We forget the killings quickly in order to sustain the .pretence that the union is in sane state.
Nigeria has lost thousands of lives to terrorists. Neither the numbers, nor those killed, appears to be important. Lives, no longer seem to count, they have become numbers, ordinary statistics, .kept for the records.
Which society watches its members decimated in this manner without being shocked into action? How can a society be so unfeeling when it cannot protect its young, its future?
Nigeria has failed to tell terrorists in succinct terms, that their actions would be punished. There .are no examples to deter them.
The choice of soft targets like schools, markets, entertainment centres and churches has become a signature of these attacks. The terrorists want attention, and bigger headlines. Our security agencies need to do more. Failure of intelligence and armed actions against terrorists is .not as bad as the unwillingness of many top Nigerians who can exert pressure on them to do so.
We cannot bring terrorists to account when we place personal and political considerations above millions of lives at risk. The lives at risk could be anyone’s as the indiscriminate attacks .have proved.
The war against terrorists can be won when we are pulling together. Any group that can murder so mindlessly, including children, is a risk to everyone, even to its avowed supporters.

Chibok burns again; as gunmen kill 51, burn Churches, houses
LAGOS  (AFP) – A number of churches in northeast Nigeria were attacked by suspected Boko Haram Islamists on Sunday, near the town of Chibok where more than 200 teenage girls were kidnapped in April.
Witnesses say they fear that yet again, dozens have been killed.
Here are some of the deadly raids, kidnappings and bombings that have been linked to Boko Haram this year:
- February 15, 2014: An attack blamed on the extremist sect leaves more than 100 people dead in the mostly Christian village of Izghe in the north-eastern state of Borno.
- April 14: Gunmen kidnap 276 female high school students in Chibok, Borno. Fifty-seven managed to escape but the rest are still being held. Several foreign countries, including the United States, have joined forces to try to find the girls.
- April 14: A blast at a bus station packed with morning commuters at Nyanya, on the southern outskirts of Abuja, kills at least 75 people, the most deadly attack to date on the capital. Boko Haram claims responsibility. On May 1, a car bomb at the same spot kills 19, and leaves 80 injured.
- May 5: At least 300 people are killed in an attack in Gamboru Ngala, in Borno state near the border with Cameroon, which totally destroys the town.
- May 20: At least 118 are killed and 56 injured in two car bomb attacks on a market in Jos, central Nigeria, which go off within 20 minutes of each other. The regional governor blames Boko Haram.
- June 1: At least 40 are killed when a bomb explodes at a football stadium in Mubi in the north-east of the country shortly after a match. The attack is blamed on Boko Haram.
- June 3: Hundreds are feared dead in a suspected Boko Haram attack on four villages in Borno state, with local leaders putting the death toll as high as 500.
- June 17: 21 football fans are killed when a bomb rips through the viewing centre where they are watching the World Cup in Damaturu, northern Nigeria.
- June 24: Local officials report 30 killed and more than 60 women kidnapped in a series of attacks over several days in Borno state, although the Nigerian government denies the abductions.
- June 25: At least 21 people are killed and 17 injured in a bombing at a crowded shopping centre in the centre of Abuja. The attack — the third on the city in three months — is blamed on Boko Haram.
- June 29: Suspected Boko Haram gunmen riding on motorcycles target a number of churches during Sunday mass, opening fire on worshippers and chasing them into the bush. Witnesses fear dozens are killed.

Opinion: Why Cross-Gender Friendships Don’t Work

bored-black-people

It is weird that a lot of people see this question and answer that it is selfishness (mostly on the part of the guys). People mostly believe that at some point in a male-female relationship, the man gets attracted to the woman and tries to take it somewhere he should not due to the fact that he cannot control himself and that puts the friendship in danger. The same thing also happens in a lot of relationships. Women have come to call men inconsiderate and perverted because a lot of men will not do anything for a woman without asking for some kind of intimate gratification and it seems true as a lot of men can start with a woman as friends but along the line start acting funny.

This sounds selfish, it sounds like the guys don’t want to do things without strings but has anyone ever wondered what happens to make the men change their atitude? It is not greed, selfishness or being a pervert? It is simple balance. It is not weird to hear guys say, I will rather spend or do this for my (male) friends that a female one because when I am broke, the male ones are the ones I can go crash with. The third law of motion is clear on this “To every action, there (should be) is an equal reaction” and we all know nature has a way of balancing things out.

When a guy and girl are friends, the girl runs to the guy for things i.e, when she wants to change her tire, when she needs to move furniture, when she needs his opinion on a project at work, an assignment, she needs advice about her BF or she needs him to drive her somewhere far away perhaps she even needs a favor very huge. Guess what? The guy obliges and he does so only for him to get a miserable “Thanks, you are the best”…….the guy gets just that. Oral appreciation and she thinks it is cool cos she has said “thanks” and they are friends but there is no balance.

Over time, this goes on and the guy gives and give while she gives nothing and at some point, the guy sits down and wonders to himself “Am I being used?”.

It even becomes worse if the girl used to be single and then she gets involved with another guy (the male friend might be interested but he was willing to let it go) and then as a result of the relationship, she stays away from him because “she wants the relationship to work” or “not pass a wrong signal to her new guy” so the guy in a way gets dumped. He now does not just feels “used” but “dumped”. He sits back and wonders what powers where at work when he sacrificed his time, maybe money, mental ability and emotions to get her to this point and she goes off prancing after another man and he thinks to himself “Never again”.

He tells himself he would never allow any woman do that to him again and since most times he needs help, he does not need a woman, he goes for the next best thing SEX. When any girl asks for anything, he asks for sex before doing it to avoid being used. Can we blame him? Of course not. Women need to learn that that dude that leaves his friends to listen to you talk can be somewhere else. He can be with his friends gisting about Beyouncè’s bossoms or J Lo’s backside but he is there to “fix” you. You don’t have to kiss him but a CD of his favorite rap artiste once a while, a pair of socks, a text once a while, remembering his birthday and buying him something (even a card), making some stew and taking it to him at home, a body spray.

The smallest things work wonders in making him feel appreciated and will go a long way in making guys change their minds about female friends being “useless” and “uncaring”. I don’t even know why this should be said as it should go without saying. It is not a crime to appreciate your friends. It is a crime to not appreciate them as it just makes you a user and guess what? No one likes a user but with a lot of guys, it goes beyond that. It is a matter of “All girls are users”.

Hence your silly action of being unappreciative is ruining the chance of another guy helping a girl who is in need (butterfly effect. Topic for later). So the next time that male friend you have always depended on starts acting funny around you. Perhaps he starts giving cheeky excuses or starts avoiding you, ask yourself if you have been a good friend back in bringing something into the friendship.

Rihanna – ”Wizkid is my type of Man”

Screen Shot 2014-06-29 at 11.25.59 AM

Lately, various reports have been floating around social media about Rihanna and Wizkid spending time in the studio probably in the quest to release a single off the Wizkid’s forth-coming album.

According to Wizkid on 23rd of June, 2014, who tweeted ” 2 great amazing studio sessions today! Plus @rihanna called me amazing! love her! lol”.

When personally asked about how the time he spent with Rihanna went, he looked so generous sharing the story he would forever remember. He said “mehn, I’m a confirmed starboy, Rihanna confirmed it. We had a great time in the studio and also spent time to hangout so as to know each other better.

She said I’m amazing and I’m her type of man, she also said she’d love to spend more time with me whenever I’m not on tour or busy but how can I be too busy for Rihanna na? *bursts into hysterical laughter*”.

Wizkid better be careful though as Rihanna as been the reason of bust ups between guys several times but we hope they cook up some good music for us.

Chelsea Offer £16million For Fernabache Striker Emmanuel Emenike

Emenike
Chelsea are hoping to wrap up a quick-fire deal for Fenerbahce striker Emmanuel Emenike after making a £16million bid for his services. Turkish newspaper Fanatik reports that Blues manager Jose Mourinho is a big fan of the forward, and decided to slap in the offer this week after watching him at the World Cup in Brazil. Emenike has helped the Nigeria team reach the knockout stages of the tournament, on the back of an excellent season at Fenerbahce, where he scored 12 goals and picked up nine assists. The 27-year-old only moved to Turkey last summer from Spartak Moscow in a £10million deal, but Fenerbahce are happy to make a quick profit on him.

“I want a woman who can go to the saloon with me” – Denrele Edun

denrele

Denrele Edun who just turned 31 talked to the Nigerian Tribune about gay allegations and dating ladies. He also denied bleaching and talked about his scandal with Charly boy. Ladies would be happy because he is actually single and searching. “I am not dating anybody for now. I am single and searching.Eh! My people, make una come put ring o! My mother has been mounting pressure. My father has been telling me. My uncle, my grandmother, everyone wan make I marry.I think when that time comes, I will marry. I have been into many relationships. I have dated girls who would want to do anything I tell them. I want a woman who can hold her own. I don’t want a woman who cannot make dialogue with me. I don’t want a woman who will want to change me because she should already know who Denrele is. I don’t want to hear, “my father said you cannot dress like that” I will be like, “Oya, come and carry your witch and go. And return me my bride price before you go”. I want a woman who is not pretentious, hypocritical or a fame seeker. I want someone who is original. I want somebody I can go to the salon together (with) to make our hair; who wouldn’t mind if people are talking. I love a woman that can wear heels. It may sound flimsy. I love girls on heels. This is why I have always had a thing for models. If my wife cannot wear heels.

Here you are talking about marriage, while people have described you as gay. What do you have to say?
I’m aware of it. In fact, a lot of people have come with different terminologies for my sexual preference. They have labelled me homosexual, heterosexual. Some have said I am bi-sexual, asexual. I think I am a sexual outlaw; that is the best way to describe it. Am I gay? I am a sexual outlaw. Gbam!

What does that mean?
I don’t know. I don’t even know what my sexual preference is. The media have blown my sexuality out of proportion. Maybe it is because I am feminine in nature, or because I look like my mother or because of the way I dress. My clothes are the reflection of my personality, but people use it to judge my sexual preference. And if people want to continually judge me because of my dressing, they should go ahead.

Does it mean you are not gay?
People can say what they like. You know, this can be a mystery. If people keep pondering on it, it will remain a mystery. If I give the answer now, una no go dey wonder about anything. Make una dey ponder dey go.

Are you using this to keep the attention on yourself?
Not quite; it’s just for the fun of it, really. I am not one of those people who would want to deliberate on people’s sexual preference. I really cannot be bothered about things like that. But it is so funny how people have made a big deal out of it. It’s not about attention. Otherwise, I would have been suing this or that newspaper for saying this or that thing about me. I really can’t be bothered.

What is the worst thing that has happened to you for being who you are?
I think it is the scandals. And I can handle scandals well but people have fabricated so much about me. They say I have a child somewhere that I have abandoned. They say I am bleaching my skin – that is even the one they are using to chase me up and down. If only people can see me when I wake up in the morning, then they will know whether I am bleaching on not.

Would you like to clear the air on that?
Of recent, I discovered my love for powder. I normally like to wear the one that is lighter than me, so anytime I use this powder and my face becomes fairer, people will begin to say I am bleaching. Someone recently said to me on Twitter: ‘Denrele has bleached his destiny away’. Another said, ‘Denrele is looking like Michael Jackson in his time of death’. Somebody said, ‘Denrele looks like the remains of a ghastly car crash’. This is the one that will trip you. The person said, ‘Denrele looks like the spirit behind this recent fuel scarcity’. I thought that was a classic one. I have received a lot from people, especially during the period I went through the Charly Boy/Denrele saga. They said I kissed Charly Boy and I was trying to cause problems in his matrimonial home. Nigerians took it upon themselves to judge the freaking daylight out of me. They tried to pull me down at any opportunity they could get. But for where? Nothing can put me down

State of the Nation: A Presidency in Denial

State of the Nation: A Presidency in Denial
Why Jonathan must crush insurgency
By Jide Ajani
Because he doesn’t want to displease some people, he continues to displease and annoy everybody.  That is President Goodluck Jonathan for you.
For a Presidency that appears to have mastered the art of saying the useful things but goes ahead to do the useless things, it is becoming inescapably decipherable why terror is gradually settling-in Abuja, Nigeria’s federal capital.
It may not matter that Aso Rock Presidential Villa is a fortress.
It may not matter that most of the leaders of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, (and the larger group of Nigerian elite) domiciled in Abuja also live in fortresses of their own, rationing police posting among each other and depriving the Nigerian public the needed security men to carry out proper surveillance and reconnaissance activities.
It may not also matter because the number of fatalities almost always recorded during each terror attack in Nigeria represents mere statistics – statistics that are at sea and which do not in the remotest way affect the owners of the country.
Perhaps, it may not even matter that members of the public living in guilt-by-indifference no longer feel so much pain when deaths are recorded in the aftermath of terror attacks in their 10s because the psyche has now been conditioned to appreciate loss of lives in their scores.
Yet, after all said and done, it should matter because members of the Jama’atu Ahlis Sunna Lidda’awati wal-Jihad, which in English means, “People Committed to the Propagation of the Prophet’s Teachings and Jihad”, and otherwise known as Boko Haram, appear to be running away with the impression that all is well with its campaign of terror.
It should be of immense concern to all those who have painted the insurgency with a tar of opposition agenda that those who were killed in the Bannex/Emap Plaza bombing did not carry any identification labeling them as either PDP or APC of APGA or LP members.
It should also matter to all right-thinking Nigerians that the present insurgency has put the country on the global stage, albeit, in a very uncomplimentary manner.
It should matter, in the most egregious of ways, that some of the over two hundred CHIBOK girls may have been carrying pregnancies at different stages of protrusion.
It should be disturbing that whereas President Jonathan told CNN mid-last year that in six months he would re-appear on the cable channel to tell them that BOKO HARAM has been defeated, the reality is that stories of Nigeria and Boko Haram on CNN are stories determined by and predicated on the exploits of the terror group.
Now, therefore, is it not time for some serious soul-searching by those who like to be described as opinion leaders, movers and shakers in northern Nigeria?
This question is very germane in the face of how the insurgency is being executed.
Firstly – and without prejudice to the shambling approach of President Jonathan and his seemingly clueless disposition in recent times – last week was supposed to be a week Jonathan and his men are celebrating the victory of their party – the PDP -in Ekiti State gubernatorial election.
But the week is being used to cope with the many acts of terror across the country – Kaduna, Kano, Adamawa and Borno.
It is for this reason that some people continue to insist that whereas Boko Haram operates as a terror group, it is either it has keyed into the agenda of those who want Jonathan out of power by 2015; or those who have threatened that over their ‘dead-body’ would he remain President post- 2015, may have inadvertently or even one way or another keyed into the agenda of the terrorists.
So, the wisest thing to do now for a President, who is becoming ashamed of what is going on, is to device a better means of not only smoking out the insurgents but also crushing them.
True, there are those who would argue that an attempt to crush the insurgents would only further harden them and may come with collateral damage. Pray, what other collateral damage would be crazier than a situation where the insurgents appear to be winning?
Worse still, some over 200 girls are still missing.
Weekly, Boko Haram and Fulani herdsmen continue to kill and maim. The citizens live in fear. Would the energy being dissipated on newspaper vendors and distributors not be better channeled to crushing the insurgency?
If President Jonathan is seen as weak, shouldn’t he at least, for his sake, his family’s sake and the sake of millions of Nigerians who elected him stand up and act? Enough of the joke about an asymmetrical warfare.

Brazil 2014: Heat forces first cooling breaks in Brazil

Abuja -  The 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil had its first cooling breaks of the competition during the Round of 16 match between the Netherlands and Mexico in Fortaleza.
It took place in both halves when referee Pedro Proenca signalled a three-minute time-out as temperatures reached above 32C inside the stadium.
Both set of players rehydrated with drinks, while both coaches took the opportunity to give team-talks.
The heat forced fans to move to the back of the stadium to get shelter.
“Climate conditions will be evaluated and should the temperature exceed 32 degrees, then the FIFA Venue Medical Office will recommend cooling breaks to the FIFA General Co-ordinator and Match Commissioner.
“Cooling breaks which will last three minutes in duration are then implemented by the referee at approximately 30 minutes into the run-of-play in both halves of the match (i.e. around the 30th minute and 75th minute respectively).
“Three minutes will then be added to stoppage time at the end of each half,’’ FIFA had earlier said in a statement, while announcing the introduction of the cooling breaks.(NAN)

Tiwa Savage Allgedly Expresses Her Anger At The Murtala Mohammed International Airport

Top Nigerian Songstress, Tiwa Savage is in the news again and this time it has nothing to do with her raunchy music video, ‘Wanted’ but this time it has to do with her reaction to a situation that recently occurred in Lagos.

Tiwa Savage
According to Punch:
At the Murtala Mohammed International Airport last Monday, Saturday Beats watched how Tiwa descended on a member of staff of the Nigerian Aviation Handling Company who she said was “rude” to her.
The Eminado crooner, looking chic in her black and white ensemble, was seen arguing and quarrelling with the NAHCO staff and her action drew a little crowd.
The NAHCO lady was unfazed by Tiwa’s fame and didn’t allow her to intimidate her as she told the people around that she wasn’t rude to Tiwa.
“I was not rude to her. I only told her to go and board since she had checked in her luggage. I wonder how that could mean that I was rude to her,” Saturday Beats overheard the NAHCO staff saying.
Not giving the lady another look, Tiwa eventually entered the boarding gate alongside her colleagues.
Tiwa and some other Nigerian artistes, Saturday Beats gathered, were on their way to Mauritius on board an Emirate flight.
Meanwhile it will be recalled that in February 2014, it was reported that tiwa Savage who was angry at a policeman for stopping her car was said to have humiliated and assaulted the policeman by removing his police cap during the argument which led to her arrest.

Tiwa Savage is, however, presently in Los Angeles to perform with Davido and a few other African acts at the BET Live event this weekend.

I Exposed My Husband, Now I’m In Trouble –19-Year-Old Nursing Mother And Wife Of Robbery Suspect

A 19-year-old girl, Kate Olowu in a recent interview with Punch revealed how life has turn a different leaf after alerting the police about a robbery which in turn led to the arrest of her husband and father of her 2 weeks baby.
photo
With a child less than two weeks old, Kate has reasons to be tense. Her life seems to have taken a tumble recently, when her husband, Monday, was taken into custody in connection with a robbery gang that snatched a Toyota Camry 2000 model, belonging to a pastor, Mr. Lawal, on Monday, May 26, 2014.

When Punch correspondents visited the Olowus’ house, a bungalow which Kate shares with her husband and mother-in-law, 68-year-old Mabel, it was obvious that the young woman was terrified of answering questions in the presence of her mother-in-law.

But when the older woman went inside to attend to some things, Kate broke down in tears and told her version of the story.

It all started a few weeks ago, when one of Monday’s customers and acquaintances, identified as Michael, walked into their house, which doubles as Monday’s shop for his embroidery designing work.

Little did Kate know that her already difficult life was about to take a turn for the worse.

She explained, “That day, I was at home when Michael came in and gave a small bag to my husband to keep for him. Monday did not even open the bag, he just collected it and dropped it somewhere. But later, I overheard Michael speaking on the phone. I heard him saying they had snatched a car and that the owner was a pastor. I didn’t know who he was speaking with over the phone but I heard him say ‘I have kept the document with the boy who does embroidery for me.’

“I was not comfortable because I hate stealing, let alone robbery. When Michael left, I went through the contents of the small bag that Michael had brought and found a name and a phone number.

“I called the number and the man at the other end said he was the agent from whom the vehicle was bought. I told the man about what happened and how Michael was planning to sell the stolen car and brought some goods to my husband. The man said he would inform the pastor. But later, the police came and arrested my husband.”

Saturday PUNCH learnt that Kate blamed herself for reporting the robbery after giving her statement to the police. Kate told our correspondents that she became sad when she realised that she had put her husband in trouble as a result of her openness.

“I thought the man who kept the documents and other things with my husband would take all the blame since my husband knew nothing about the issue. I thought Michael would simply be arrested and that would be the end of it. I love my husband because he does not stay out late and he takes care of me despite the fact that we are poor and we both sometimes go to bed hungry,” she said.

But Kate’s trouble is even bigger now.

Unfortunately for Kate, her mother-in-law has got wind of the fact that she was the one who made the call that put her husband in trouble. She suspected that the police gave the mother-in-law that information.

Kate broke down as she continued, while trying to be discreet so as not to attract the attention of her mother-in-law, who had left the living room.

She said, “Mama has said she would send me packing with my child. I have nowhere to go. I have nothing. I stopped school when my mother died because there was no money to go further. My father is bedridden.

“Mama came to marry me for Monday because we had nothing. I love my husband very much and I did not mean him any harm. The only close relative that I could pack out to live with is my grandma in Benin city (Edo State), but I don’t have a dime to even travel there.”

Kate said that the only thing that could save her from becoming homeless is for Monday to be released from police custody.

Saturday PUNCH knew about the case following Mr. Lawal’s testimony in his church- the Living Faith Church, Sango-Ota.

A pleased Lawal had thanked God for sparing his life during the armed robbery incident. However, Lawal declined to comment on the issue when approached by our correspondent, saying that the case was already being investigated by the police.

A source at the Special Anti-Robbery Squad headquarters, Ikeja, which is handling the case, obliged Saturday PUNCH with the details of the case based on the verbal accounts and written statements of Lawal and the apprehended suspects.

According to the source, the incident occurred on the said date around 8pm as Lawal was returning to his house.

The source said that Lawal’s account showed that he was approached by Monday’s accomplices, Michael and Asunmo– as he was about to drive inside his compound in an estate in Egbeda area of Lagos.

The source said, “Lawal said he was bundled into the back of his car by the assailants. Michael sat in the back with him while the other, Asunmo, who was driving the car, took the Isheri-LASU-Iba Expressway from Egbeda. As a pastor in his church, Lawal started calling to God but Michael, who sat with him tried to shut him up. Lawal deposed that Michael assaulted him by slapping him in an attempt to shut him up, but he continued shouting Jesus, anyway.

“Our investigation showed that the robbers dropped Lawal off at Akesan and gave him N200 to get back home after he pleaded with them that they had robbed him of all the money he had with him. One of them had also threatened to shoot and kill him.”

Some of the things that were stolen along with the vehicle included Automated Teller Machine cards, cheque books, some cash, project documents and a Bible.

But more than four weeks after the incident, the stolen car is yet to be recovered.

The source, however, explained that the stolen car has taken a long route after being traced to Agbara, Ogun State, Ikorodu, Lagos State and finally Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

“First, we traced the car to Asunmo, who lives in Agbara area. He confessed that he had sold the vehicle to a car dealer in Ikorodu area of Lagos for N200,000. When we got to the dealer, he said that the car had been sold to someone from Port Harcourt,” the source told Saturday PUNCH.

Meanwhile, Mabel and Kate have been denying allegations levelled against Monday, saying he had innocently accepted goods from Michael. At some point, Mabel became hysterical in her defence of her son.

But their claims were swiftly debunked by the source, who said that the police had also recovered guns and two complete sets of army uniforms, suspected to have been used in robbery operations, from Monday’s house.

According to the police source, an underground armoury was also discovered in the house, which his family members refused to show our correspondents during the visit.

After much prodding though, Mabel led our correspondents to the backyard of the house where she admitted that a “local gun” was recovered by the police. She also denied that Monday knew about the gun.

“Michael kept it there but my son did not know about it,” she insisted.

Meanwhile, the police suspect that the guns recovered from Monday’s house belonged to his late father, who was a veteran in the Nigerian Army.

The source said, “Some of us feel that the guns and uniforms belonged to Monday’s father and when he died, Monday started renting them out to his accomplices, who rob with them and give him his share of the spoils.

He said, “While in police custody, Monday even sent his brother to quickly go home and hide the guns before the police would find them. The brother did that that but when the police couldn’t find any gun in his house, they questioned him more since the complainant (Lawal) had alleged that he was threatened with a gun. Then, Monday confessed and told the police where to find the guns, including the one used to threaten Lawal.”

Saturday PUNCH spoke with some members of Lawal’s church, who knew about the case and their account slightly differs from Kate’s story.

A church member who has been following the case, said that Lawal went to report the incident in church, where the founder of the church, Bishop David Oyedepo, prayed with him and assured him that the culprits would be apprehended within four days.

According to the source, less than 24 hours after Oyedepo’s prayer, Kate had started calling one of the numbers she found in the stolen goods, belonging to one of the church pastors to report the incident.

The source said, “She said that some people brought some goods to an uncompleted building behind her house and that she overheard them saying the operation was successful. She said there was a big Bible among the goods which made her uncomfortable each time she saw it.

“She said she felt like a pot of fire was on her head and that she would have returned some of the goods but that her husband would kill her if he found out that anything was missing there.”

Kate later met a team from the church at an agreed place, where she described her house and when they could come and recover the goods.

The church member, who did the narration, said he was amazed by Kate’s openness at that point.

Although, Lawal’s car has not yet been found, some of the church members have given the police some credit for their persistence in the investigation.

The Officer-in-Charge, SARS, Ikeja, Abba Kyari, declined to comment on the status of the case, saying he was not authorised to speak to journalists.

An informed senior officer at the command, however, denied that the police were responsible for disclosing Kate’s role in her husband’s arrest to Mabel.

“Police officers are not daft; most of the breakthroughs that the police have credited to informants. We can’t compromise our informants because of armed robbers. The information could have been leaked from another source that knows about it,” the source said.

Efforts to reach the spokesperson for the Lagos State Police Command, Ngozi Braide, were unsuccessful as she did not respond to calls and text messages sent to her mobile phone.
